Fort Myers Beach was one of the communities hardest hit by Hurricane Ian when the powerful storm made landfall in Southwest Florida on September 28, 2022. Ian struck the coast as a Category 4 hurricane with winds near 150 miles per hour and a devastating storm surge that overwhelmed barrier islands and coastal neighborhoods. The storm pushed walls of water through homes, businesses, and streets, leaving much of the island underwater within hours.
The destruction across Fort Myers Beach was catastrophic. Entire neighborhoods were swept away, buildings were ripped from their foundations, and many longtime local landmarks were destroyed. Roads, bridges, marinas, and utilities suffered severe damage, cutting off access to parts of the area for days after the storm. Reports following the hurricane estimated that the vast majority of structures on the island were either damaged or completely destroyed, making it one of the worst natural disasters in the history of Southwest Florida.
The photos below are from my personal collection that I have previously shared on social media. We had not yet completed our move to our new home in Fort Myers when Ian hit. I raised money using social media and drove a van of supplies down from Louisville, Kentucky. What is normally a 17 hour drive turned into 31 hours, having slept twice for 90 minutes total in the van. Detour after detour took me from Brandon to Lake Placid to get back to Fort Myers. I spent about 10 days in the area helping deliver supplies to those in need and I can honestly say that no human should ever to see the things that I witnessed.
In the days after the storm, emergency crews, National Guard units, and volunteers worked around the clock to search for survivors, clear debris, and deliver supplies. Thousands of residents were displaced, and many families lost homes, businesses, and personal belongings. Videos and photographs from the aftermath showed boats tossed onto roads, piles of debris stretching for miles, and only the concrete stilts of former beachfront homes still standing. The community faced widespread power outages, damaged communications systems, and a long recovery process.
Despite the devastation, the Fort Myers Beach community showed resilience and determination during the rebuilding effort. Residents, local businesses, and volunteers came together to restore the island while honoring the memories tied to the area’s historic waterfront culture. Reconstruction has focused on stronger building standards and improved storm preparation to better withstand future hurricanes. Hurricane Ian permanently changed Fort Myers Beach, but it also highlighted the strength and unity of the people who call the island home.
