Permits Mark a Major Milestone for the New Fort Myers Beach Pier
The rebuilding of the iconic Fort Myers Beach Pier has taken another significant step forward as Lee County continues securing the permits needed to begin construction. After Hurricane Ian destroyed the beloved landmark in September 2022, residents and visitors have eagerly awaited the return of one of Southwest Florida’s most recognizable destinations. County officials have completed much of the design work, obtained state approvals, and have continued working through the remaining federal permitting process with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before construction can officially begin. The permitting process is one of the final hurdles before crews can mobilize on-site, making this an encouraging milestone for the community.
Once construction begins, the new pier will be considerably larger and stronger than the original structure. Plans call for a pier approximately 1,000 feet long and 12 feet wide, built with reinforced concrete piles, a durable concrete deck, aluminum railings, shade structures, and modern features designed to better withstand future hurricanes. Lee County has also awarded the construction contract, allowing work to move forward as soon as all federal approvals are received. Officials currently anticipate approximately one year of construction once permitting is finalized, bringing the long-awaited return of this community landmark one step closer.
A Symbol of Recovery for Fort Myers Beach
The Fort Myers Beach Pier has long served as a gathering place for fishing, sightseeing, sunsets, and community events. Its reconstruction represents far more than replacing a damaged structure—it symbolizes the continued recovery of Fort Myers Beach following Hurricane Ian. The larger design will provide additional space for visitors while improving long-term resilience against coastal storms. Funding for the project comes from a combination of state disaster recovery funds, tourist development taxes, FEMA assistance, and other recovery programs rather than local property taxes.
